Basketball Over Run By Squirrels, 77-70

Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith basketball team opened a USA South home stand on Saturday as the Fighting Squirrels from Mary Baldwin visited.  Mary Baldwin pulled out the 77-70 victory.

The first half saw the game tied at 8-all five minutes in until Mary Baldwin (4-6, 2-5 USA South) built a 10 point lead with seven minutes left in the half.  The Avenging Angels then chipped away and cut it to two with two minutes left in the half.  Mary Baldwin held the four point lead with a 41-37 halftime advantage.

Bryana Holmes' jumper in the first two minutes of the second half gave Meredith (3-9, 1-5) a one-point advantage at 44-43. Megan Rahn's free throws with 15 minutes left gave Meredith a six point lead at 51-45.   The Squirrels then chipped away and took the lead back for good with nine minutes to go and moved to the 77-70 victory.  Meredith out rebounded Mary Baldwin 54-47 and out blocked them 6-2.  Mary Baldwin held the advantage shooting from the field 40% to 34%.

The Avenging Angels were led by Rahn with a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds.  Bryana Holmes hit three three-pointers to give her 11 points.  Kristen Alford had 10 points and five rebounds while Rebekah Cox pulled down nine rebounds to go with eight points.  Mary Baldwin was led by Sabrina Desper with 19 points and Shanice Miles with 18.

Meredith returns to action on Sunday as they play the Shenandoah Hornets at 2 p.m.
