Box Score Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith basketball team faced Methodist University on Saturday in a USA South match up. The Monarchs defeated the Avenging Angels 77-69.
Methodist (8-8, 5-4 USA South) started the game on a 10-0 run until Megan Rahn's three pointer put the Avenging Angels on the board. The two teams played an even game the rest of the half as Meredith was able to go on a 9-2 run to cut a 16 point lead down to nine. Methodist had the 36-27 half time advantage.
Meredith (4-11, 2-7) was able to cut the lead to six points to start the second half on a three pointer by Tyler Gresham, but that was as close as they would get in the closely played half. A last end of game streak got a Methodist 13 point lead down to six at 75-69 with 30 seconds left. The Avenging Angels battled and kept the Monarchs within striking distance but just couldn't quite close the gap. Meredith outscored Methodist in the second half 42-41.
Meredith was led by Rahn's double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds. Bryana Holmes had 12 points and six rebounds. Allyson Stephenson had nine points and Kristen Alford had eight. Methodist was led by Jackie Lyles' 19 points and 18 rebounds while Iesha Hayes also had 19 points.
The Avenging Angels return to action on Tuesday as they head to Danville, Va. to face Averett University for a 7 p.m. game.
