ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan cruised to a 25-10 fourth set win to seal a 3-1 conference victory over Meredith in tonight's breast cancer awareness event in Rocky Mount. The first three sets included scores of 19-25, 12-25, 25-22 in favor of the Bishops.

The Avenging Angels slipped to 3-5 in USA South action and an even 10-10 overall. The Battling Bishops sit with a perfect 6-0 league record on the win.

Wesleyan opened the match on a 3-0 lead before Meredith pitched in on the scoring during the next eight points. But a kill and a pair of service winners helped th Bishops charge ahead to a 15-5 lead.

The Avenging Angels capitalized on a trio of miscues from the hosts to stay within reach when Wesleyan's Taylor Johnson unleashed an attack that would propel the Bishops on to a 20-10 advantage.

Junior middle Molly Markley helped her team to a 6-2 run, including three blasts from freshman Sarah Brandon, before the Battling Bishops picked off the last three points for the win and a 1-0 match lead.

After a couple of missed serves in the opening plays of set two, N.C. Wesleyan orchestrated a 14-point run on steady serving from Erin Augspurger to cruise ahead to a 19-3 advantage.

Meredith jumped back in the mix on a flurry of frontline errors from the Bishops and kills from Markley and Brandon. But the hole proved too deep to climb and the Avenging Angels found themselves down by two.

The Angels used the interval between sets two and three to recover and regroup before heading into a must-have game. Markley and Brandon responded with help from Cori Spade and April Hausler.

The teams were even at sevens when Hausler connected on back-to-back aces to push the Avenging Angels to a 14-7 edge. Bishops' coach Robin Pietryk whistled for a timeout during the run to help her team get back on track. Swings from Johnson and Meredith Smith launched an 8-3 Wesleyan comeback to pull the hosts to within reach at 19-16.

Meredith remained steadfast on its mission and secured the 25-22 win capped off with big blows from Spade.

N.C. Wesleyan put together 13 consecutive points in the fourth to steal any momentum enjoyed by the Avenging Angels before finishing off the visitors.

Markley and Brandon posted nine kills apiece with Markley leading the match with five blocks. Freshmen defenders Jessi Johnson and Callie McDonald added 10 digs each and Kara Baughman dished out 29 assists in the loss.

Four of the Bishops finished with double-digit kills with Johnson leading the way on .586 hitting. Kristi Lucas posted 51 assists on the night.

Meredith takes a break from the league to host Southern Virginia University Friday night at 7 p.m. Coach Fiona Barkley will honor her seniors Wednesday, October 24, during a battle with cross-town rival William Peace.
