Greensboro Edges Past Meredith for a 72-67 League Win

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - Greensboro College edged past the Meredith Avenging Angels 72-67 during tonight's USA South pairing in Raleigh. The hosts had no answer for Greensboro's leading producer Bianca Richburg who scored 31 points, 10 more than her per game average.

The Pride advanced to 4-5 in the USA South (8-7 overall), and Meredith dropped their second consecutive conference game falling to 2-7 in the USA South (5-10 overall).

GC opened up with a quick double-digit lead in the first four minutes of play with Meredith's Keyanka Bailey netting the team's only field goal.

Bryana Holmes launched a pair of threes and Rah'nika Jones finished three plays inside the paint to help pull the Avenging Angels back to within four with just under 10 minutes remaining in the period.

Richburg led her team back to a 12-point advantage when McKenzi Edwards ignited a 13-1 Meredith run. Teammate Danielle Lee dropped in a bucket on the team's final possession of the half to send the teams into the break tied at 33.

After the intermission, the Avenging Angels scored the first three points to earn their first lead on the night.

Lee picked up back-to-back fouls during the next 79 seconds forcing Meredith's strongest defender to the bench. The Pride responded with a 12-1 run extending their lead back to eight.

Head Coach Melinda Campbell's squad knocked down 8 of 11 free throws during the next 7:23 to stay in the mix and cut the Greensboro lead back to two with nearly seven minutes remaining in regulation.

Richburg ended a 2:30 drought on both ends of the court with a jumper at 4:33 assisted by Stacy Hicks.

Bailey and Edwards netted a pair of jumpers to tie the game once more with just 3:54 left on the clock.

The Pride scored the next four points to provide a small cushion against a determined Meredith team. But a couple of unfortunate miscues from the Avenging Angels gave Greensboro just enough room to secure the win during the final seconds of play.

Edwards led Meredith with 19 points and three assists, and Bailey added 14 points and five rebounds. Jones posted her second double-double on the season with 13 points and 10 boards in the loss.

Jena Cabe added 13 points for The Pride, including nine from three-point range. Chevena Pickard grabbed nine rebounds and dished out five assists in the win.

The Avenging Angels hit the road this weekend for a pair of conference contests. The team travels first to N.C. Wesleyan for a 2 p.m. tipoff Saturday followed by a Sunday afternoon event at Christopher Newport.
