Captains Cruise Past Meredith 75-54

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Meredith Avenging Angels played a close first half with Christopher Newport posting their only lead with just six minutes remaining in the period. But an 18-4 Captains run gave the hosts a 13-point advantage going into the break, and CNU never looked back as they cruised to a 75-54 victory.

Christopher Newport improved to 16-2 overall and 9-2 among league opponents. The Avenging Angels dropped to 5-12 on the season and 2-9 in the conference with the loss.

A battle of turnovers and steals outline the action in the first half as each team closed the stanza with 15 TOs and a combined 22 steals.

In the 10th minute of the first half, Meredith's Danielle Lee netted a jumper and followed up with a steal on the other end dishing off to Keyanka Bailey for a layup.

Rah'nika Jones knocked in her three first-half points to give Meredith the lead before the Angels' offense went stone cold. Only Bailey managed to find the goal the rest of the period, dropping two from inside the paint.

The teams exchanged baskets during the first 13 minutes of the second period, but CNU dropped in a trio of three-pointers to extend their double-digit lead to 20.

Point guard McKenzi Edwards scored Meredith's next five points, and Jones chipped in 11 during the second period. But the Avenging Angels were no match for CNU's 71% from the arc and 15 points from the line.

Jones led her team with 15 points, adding eight rebounds. Bailey and Edwards combined for 21 with Bailey posting the team's only double-double with 10 boards. Edwards picked up six steals on the day, and Bailey dished out as many assists.

Captain Nicole Mitchell posted a double-double during the first 20 minutes of play before finishing the afternoon with a game-high 19 points, 13 rebounds. Camry Green followed suit chipping in 16 points and grabbing 13 boards.

Meredith steps outside the league Thursday evening to host Southern Virginia. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Weatherspoon Gymnasium. The Avenging Angels return to conference play hosting Maryville and Ferrum in a doubleheader weekend.
