Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College volleyball team won tonight's cross-town battle 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19) versus USA South rival William Peace. Senior Molly Markley posted a team-high 12 kills with four blocks to lead the Avenging Angels to victory.
Meredith ended an early 9-2 run on a trio of kills, including back-to-back winners from Jessica Goodwin.
Each team added another point before the Pacers put together a 9-1 run to extend the lead to 19-7.
MC's Head Coach Fiona Barkley whistled for a timeout to help disrupt Peace. The strategy slowed the WPU momentum and gave the Avenging Angels an opportunity to regroup.
Karlie Long and Anna Hayes connected for a Meredith point, and the Angels scored another on a misstep from the hosts.
But the Pacers added four more points during the next five plays to keep Meredith at bay.
Hayes dished out another assist to Katelyn Rall, which launched an Avenging Angel run that would carry the team to a 25-20 set one win.
WPU opened up with an early set-two lead, including a three consecutive winners from senior outside hitter Lauren Naugle.
But Katelyn Rall landed a kill from the rightside to end the run. Long launched one of two service aces, and Goodwin put down a pair of winners to help Meredith break into the lead 8-7.
The teams tied on three of the next seven plays before Meredith once again took control.
Markley scored on an assist from Clarke Glendenning and connected with Long for a block to help the Avenging Angels to a 5-0 run.
Hayes picked up a point and libero Emery McGee crushed three consecutive winners from the service line to extend Meredith's lead to seven at 20-13.
Peace continued to battle, but the Avenging Angels completed the win for a 2-0 match advantage.
The trend continued in the third set with William Peace out in front 7-4 in the early moments.
Meredith exchanged points with the Pacers through a 21-19 WPU lead. But match leader Megan Mansfield ignited a four-point Peace run to end the set and force the Angels to a fourth.
The Avenging Angels regained their composure and put together a 7-3 opening series capped off with a pair of kills from Jasmine Aguinaldo.
Back-to-back Pacer blocks helped WPU to four of the next five points to pull to within one at 8-7.
Markley landed a blast on the next ball to rotate Glendenning to the service line, and the senior setter served her team to six consecutive points, including a pair of aces.
Peace whistled for a break and posted a 3-0 run in the next series to stay in the mix.
The teams exchanged points during the next dozen plays when WPU put together three consecutive winners to challenge the Meredith lead.
Barkley settled her team from the sideline and Markley landed three kills in the next four plays to close out the win.
Long and Hayes eachd notched a double-double. Long posted 11 kills, 14 digs, and Hayes notched 26 assists, 11 digs. Aguinaldo and Goodwin scored on six kills apiece, and McGee recorded nine digs.
Mansfield led all with 14 kills, adding 10 digs. Naugle and Tempestt Frazier added eight kills apiece, and libero Maddie Irvin notched a match-high 26 digs.
Meredith travels to Staunton, Virginia, this weekend for the final USA South play date of the regular season. The Angels will face Mary Baldwin and Greensboro beginning at Noon.
