Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. - The Meredith College basketball team lost a 71-67 game to Alvernia University in Sunday's finals of the Washington and Lee Tip-Off Tournament. Down by as many as a dozen, the Avenging Angels fought back in the final seconds but would come up short.
Meredith's leading scorer Kim Hinton tied the game at 67 with just 34 seconds remaining, but Crusader Kaitlyn Roh hit four big free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Hinton and McKenzi Edwards jumpstarted Meredith's offense as the Avenging Angels held a five point lead at 14:50 to start the game.
But a quick layup followed by a three-pointer from the Crusaders tied the game.
Insider Rah'nika Jones picked up a steal that would turn into a layup from Edwards to edge past Alvernia 14-12. But that would be the last time Meredith held the advantage during regulation.
Heading into the intermission, Keyanka Bailey scored a layup and Laquetta Hairston knocked down a pair of threes to pull Meredith back to a single-digit deficit at 37-30.
With a 10-point contribution from Jones in the second period, the Avenging Angels outscored Alvernia 37-34 but would fall just shy in the final seconds of play.
Hinton led MC with a career- and team-high of 13 points and led with nine of Meredith's 43 total rebounds. Edwards hit 12 and Bailey added 10 in a balanced scoring effort for the Avenging Angels. Bailey added six assists and rookie Asia Milton dished out five in the loss. Jones tallied four steals in addition to her 11 total points.
Tyra Roberts led all with 17 points for the Crusaders, adding three blocks. Jenna Wolff notched 14 points in the win.
The Tip-Off host Washington and Lee defeated Galaudet 65-52 in game one of Sunday's tournament action.
Meredith hosts a pair of home events in the coming week beginning with Guilford Wednesday, November 20. Lynchburg follows at 2 p.m. Saturday.
