Box Score STAUNTON, Va. - The Mary Baldwin (0-22, 0-15 USA South) Fighting Squirrels remained steadfast during the first 11 minutes of today's USA South contest before Meredith College (7-15, 3-12 USA South), led by point guard McKenzi Edwards, opened up a 20-point advantage going into halftime and never looked back onto a 91-54 victory.
Head Coach Melinda Campbell started a smaller lineup in today's game, which proved effective against a determined MBC. Edwards opened the game with a pair of jumpers and scored 14-of-17 total points in the first half thanks to unselfish teammates and good ball movement.
The game remained close through the first 10:50 with offensive leadership from Mary Baldwin's Shamanda Washington, who scored an impressive 22 points on the day.
In the next series, Keyanka Bailey found Danielle Lee open for a jumper and created an MBC turnover 12 seconds later to give Bryana Holmes a bucket as Meredith jumped ahead by 12 on a 10-1 run.
Raven Gregory pitched in a jumper in the final two minutes of the first period along with Laquetta Hairston to extend the lead going into the break.
The teams exchanged points after the intermission when a 9-1 run by the Avening Angels put them out of reach for good.
Laquetta Hairston ended the day with a career-high 16 points, including 2-3 from three-point range. Lee added double-digit scoring for just the second time in her career and the first this season with 14 points, including 6-7 from the line. Tyler Gresham came off the bench to contribute a team-high nine rebounds towards Meredith's 48 total boards in the win.
MBC's Jazmine Brooks and Meagan Barron contributed a combined 21 points to assist Washington's efforts, and Shanice Miles picked up four steals in the loss.
Meredith faces the Averett Cougars Sunday afternoon in a 2 p.m league event. The team returns to Weatherspoon next weekend for a Play 4Kay event Friday evening with the Piedmont Lions.
