Softball Scores Four Late to Take Game One, Triple Gives Cougars Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DANVILLE, Va. - The Meredith Avenging Angels softball team split Sunday's USA South doubleheader at Averett University. In game one Meredith scored four runs in the top of the seventh to finish off the Cougars 13-5. But Amanda White's RBI double was not enough in extra innings of game two as Averett went on to claim the 6-5 win for a split on the day.

MC finished the day 5-6 overall and 3-2 in league play, while the Cougars moved to 9-11 on the season and 3-3 in the USA South.

AU opened the day with a 1-0 first-inning lead on a Meredith error. But the Avenging Angels picked up their first baseman with a trio of runs in each of the next two frames to claim a 6-1 advantage going into the fourth.

MC pitcher Amanda Beirne took care of the first two Cougar batters in the bottom of the inning before two triples and a double cleared the bases to pull Averett to within one.

Meredith rallied in the fifth with five singles adding four runs.

The defense took care of business in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to give the Avenging Angels the chance to finish off the Cougars with five hits and four more runs in the seventh.

Starting the inning at the top of the order, Leah Friedman and Mindi Stallings both advanced to first on a pair of singles through the left side. White drilled one to left and scored Friedman to start the run. Two more scored on AU errors, and Sara Cranford capped off the series with an RBI to seal the win.

Meredith carried the momentum into the second game. Shortstop Ashley Green put the Avenging Angels on the board scoring Friedman, who advanced to first on a single and picked up two more bases in the next two at-bats. Cranford picked up her second RBI on the day scoring Green on a long ball to center.

After a scoreless second inning, Averett rallied in the bottom of the third. Morgan Jones led off with a single and Beirne walked the next batter. Jones scored on the next at-bat and a double from Amy Hamlett added three more to give the Cougars a 4-2 advantage.

Catcher Lorri Cole led Meredith to runs in the fifth and seventh to force the game into extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth, Stallings advanced tiebreaker run Friedman on a sacrifice bunt and White earned the RBI with a double to right center giving Meredith a one-run lead.

Following nearly the same playbook, AU managed to keep their leadoff batter on first and scored both she and the tiebreaker run with a triple to end the game for the win.

Beirne went 1-1 on the day, allowing five runs with eight strikeouts and three walks. AU's April Costa took the loss and Hamlet pitched a complete game to earn her second win in game two.

The Avenging Angels face cross town rival William Peace Wednesday, March 20. First pitch of the USA South doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
