Softball Splits Doubleheader with Cross-Town Rival WPU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith Avenging Angels (6-7, 4-3 USA South) left four runners on base for a 2-1 loss in game one of today's softball action at William Peace University (4-21-1, 3-7 USA South). In the nightcap a 2-RBI homerun from third baseman Sara Cranford followed by an 11-hit, six-run surge in the final three innings forced a split on the day.

The Pacers opened the StrikeOut Cancer doubleheader with a pair of hits and two runs to take a first-inning lead.

WPU's Heather Dindinger cleared the next three Meredith batters, and the Avenging Angels left a Pacer on third in the bottom of the frame to hold off the hosts.

With two outs on the board in the top of the third, rookie DP Mindi Stallings singled to center field advancing Leah Friedman, who reached first on a fielder's choice, to second. Amanda White drilled one to right scoring Friedman to put the Angels on the board.

The defensive battle left both teams scoreless the rest of the way, and gave Dindinger her second conference win on the season. Amanda Beirne took the loss for Meredith allowing four hits with six strikeouts.

The Avenging Angels regrouped during the break and came out swinging in game two.

After a scoreless first inning, Ashley Green advanced to first on a single to left. Beirne pushed her to second, and Green picked up third on a throwing error. Cranford drilled one over the left field fence to put two on the board for Meredith.

Peace picked up a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth, but the Avenging Angels rallied to secure the 8-3 victory.

Beirne posted her fifth win on the season allowing six hits and a pair of runs with nine strikeouts and one walk. Kendra Yearick earned the loss for WPU.

White led all with five hits on the day, adding three RBI for Meredith. Green and Lorri Cole posted a trio of hits apiece, and Alex Warren and Friedman combined for four with a pair of doubles.

Dindinger and Jacey Quarles recorded five of the six hits in game two to lead the Pacer offense.

Meredith hosts a pair of doubleheaders this weekend beginning with Methodist Saturday, March 23, in a StrikeOut Cancer game hosted by the Avenging Angels.  Fans will have an opportunity to support the efforts in the fight against women's cancers during the event. Greensboro College travels to Raleigh Sunday to close out the weekend. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. each day.
