Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. - The Piedmont Lions (27-5, 17-3 USA South), ranked #11 nationally, scored a game winner in the top of the seventh to claim a 4-3 victory over Meredith College (14-11, 12-7 USA South) in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader series. The USA South leader clinched the sweep on a two-out rally in the fifth for a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
The Avenging Angels picked up the first hit of the day on a single from catcher Lorri Cole but left a runner on base heading into the third.
PC loaded the bases in the top of the frame with three singles in the first four at-bats. Amanda Beirne walked the first run home and Kristin Hamby drove in two more on a long single to the outfield to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage.
Meredith countered in the fifth as Cole posted her second of three hits on a single to left. Mindi Stallings moved Cole around, and Courtney Saunders found the gap for the RBI. Leah Friedman tied the game with a 2-RBI-single on the next play.
Piedmont's Megan McClain drove in the game winner in the seventh with a single up the middle.
Beirne took the loss for Meredith allowing four runs with a pair each of strikeouts and walks, while Brittany Head posted the win for the visitors.
Game two opened with the Lions on the board early with a 2-0 lead.
Avenging Angels shortstop Alex Warren crushed a ball over the left field fence two innings later to give Meredith a score, and Cole drove in Ashley Green to tie the game.
The Lions picked up a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to close out the win.
Beirne took the loss in her second complete game of the day, and Piedmont's Jordan Ellington earned the win for the visitors.
Cole led her team with four hits, including 3-3 in game one. Saunders added three on the day with a RBI, and Friedman drove in two in the day's opener.
Meredith hosts LaGrange College Sunday to complete the USA South regular season. The top eight finishers head to Rocky Mount April 12 for the conference championships.
Just prior to the Noon start, Athletics Director Jackie Myers will present selected student-athletes with the National Student Athlete Day Award for achieving excellence in academics and athletics, while making significant contributions to the community. The presentation is held in conjunction with NCAA Division III Week, which officially begins Monday.
Head Coach Kim Scavone and her staff will also recognize the three seniors before the first pitch.
