Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College volleyball team posted two wins after Saturday's USA South play date. The Avenging Angels defeated Greensboro College 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-13, 25-15) to open the quad match and followed with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-19, 25-21) sweep over Mary Baldwin.
In other action during the day, Methodist tallied wins over both The Pride and MBC.
In the opening match of the day, Meredith took an early 7-3 lead over The Pride and extended their advantage with a trio of service aces from rookie Karlie Long. Katelyn Rall landed a kill to cap off the run for an eight-point Angel advantage.
GC's Megan Smith found a gap on the next play, but a pair of missteps from The Pride kept Meredith in control.
The Avenging Angels continued to challenge The Pride's defense and made quick work of the first frame for a 1-0 match lead.
The visitors came out fighting in set two and held a one point advantage over Meredith at 5-4.
Rall launched a kill at 5-5 and tipped over a second to put MC back on top. After earning two assists with Rall, Anna Hayes pushed one to the deep corner to keep the run alive.
GC took the serve back from Jasmine Aguinaldo on a pair of kills and put together a 6-4 run to capture a one-point lead at 11-10.
The Pride scored three of the next four, but an offensive error rotated Meredith's Rall back to the lineup for another kill tipped just to the side of the block.
Greensboro's frontline continued to pressure Meredith and landed a trio of points to keep the Avenging Angels at bay for a 19-14 advantage.
MC's Jessica Goodwin played a smart ball just over the net to win the ball back. Markley partnered with Rall and Goodwin for a pair of blocks to pull within one at 19-18.
The Pride ended the run on the next play, but Meredith continued to disrupt Greensboro's offense. Two GC errors followed by a point from Hayes edged the Avenging Angels ahead by one at 21-20.
An unforced Meredith error gave Greensboro just enough room to slide back in and finish the set 25-21 to tie the match at one's.
Meredith and Greensboro tied on four occasions during the first 14 plays of set three. On the next ball Long landed a backrow blast on a pass from Glendenning to shift the momentum in favor of the Angels.
GC managed just six more points as Meredith cruised to a 25-13 finish for a 2-1 match lead.
The Avenging Angels used the win to take clear control in the fourth frame to open with a 7-2 lead.
The teams exchanged points during the next series leaving Meredith with a five-point lead at 11-6. But a trio of mishandled balls from the Avenging Angels pulled The Pride back to within two.
A poised Meredith squad settled and Markley launched a kill from the outside on the next play. A Greensboro overpass set Markley up for another blast from the middle, and an error on the block continued the surge.
A pair of Glendenning service aces forced a GC timeout and ended the Avenging Angel run, but Greensboro would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
Meredith out hit The Pride .259 hitting compared to a mere .093, including a trio of Angels in double figures. Long led MC with 14 kills and 15 digs in her sixth career double-double, adding four service aces. Markley pitched in 13 kills, two blocks, and Rall added a dozen kills and three blocks. McGee finished with a match-high 18 digs, adding six assists.
Liz Widenhouse led The Pride with 14 kills, 12 blocks.
In the nightcap Mary Baldwin took an early 5-1 lead on a pair of kills from team leader Katelyn Rice and another from Latoya Diggs.
But a kill from Aguinaldo followed by a blast from Long and two more points from Rall set Meredith on a clear path to victory. The Avenging Angels maintained control and cruised to a 25-8 set one win.
Mary Baldwin scored first in the second frame, but Glendenning quickly returned the ball to the Avenging Angels on a kill, assisted by Emery McGee. Three miscues from the Squirrels landed Meredith in front 4-1.
The teams exchanged points in the next series before Diggs served MBC on a 4-0 run capped off with a kill from Rice to retake a one-point lead.
Four consecutive blows from Meredith, including a kill from freshman Elizabeth Pattison pushed the Avenging Angels back in front.
A persistent Mary Baldwin team battled with Meredith, but the hosts held on for a 25-19 finish to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Squirrels continued to fight in the third frame and forced an offensive battle with the Angels.
But steady hitting from Long and Rall helped Meredith finish off their opponent in three.
Long posted a match-high 11 kills, and Rall added nine. Pattison tallied six kills in just 14 attempts, and McGee posted another match-high with 12 digs. Hayes dished out 20 assists and added five kills, and Glendenning finished with 10 assists and three service aces.
Mary Baldwin's Rice and Diggs combined for 19 kills, and Rice tallied 10 digs for a double-double.
Meredith returns to Weatherspoon at 2 p.m. Sunday for a non-conference pairing with Emory and Henry. Later in the week, the Avenging Angels face cross-town rival William Peace in conference action. The USA South match is slated for a 7 p.m. start Thursday, October 3.
