Edwards Nets Free Throws to Finish Off William Peace 62-60

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - With just one second left in the game, Meredith's McKenzi Edwards drained a pair of free throws to finish off cross-town rival William Peace 62-60 in tonight's USA South thriller. The Pacers tied the game on a second chance in-bounds play with just six seconds remaining, but a defensive foul gave the ball to Edwards for the win.

After a slow offensive start for both teams, Meredith carried a nine-point, 30-21 halftime advantage into the locker room.

Both teams traded points through the first 6:20 of the second period with the Avenging Angels maintaining a steady lead at 38-29.

Keyanka Bailey hit a quick jumper the next time down the floor and forced a Pacer steal on the next play. Bailey dished off the steal to Edwards who finished the play for a 13-point Meredith advantage at 42-29.

A pair of Angel miscues opened the door for William Peace, and the Pacers pulled to within six at 10:41.

Meredith's Tyler Gresham found Rah'nika Jones under the basket for a 38-46 advantage. Bailey and Edwards scored back-to-back layups on a pair of missed opportunities from Peace to increase that lead to double-digits.

WPU cut the Meredith lead in half with 6:58 remaining only to see the Avenging Angels pull away again on another bucket inside the paint.

A trio of unforced Meredith turnovers gave the momentum back to the hosts, and the Pacers took advantage of the mistakes.

Another ball handling error from Meredith gave the ball back to WPU, and Lexus Simpson hit Ka'la Jordan on the break to pull the Pacers to within three with less than a minute on the clock.

Peace whistled for a timeout to set up a press, but Meredith cleared the backcourt without issue. A WPU foul put Edwards at the line, and she hit one-of-two from the stripe to keep the Avenging Angels out front 60-56 with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.

Jones grabbed the offensive rebound on Edwards' second attempt but missed her free throws on the play.

A quick Meredith foul stopped the clock again and gave the ball back to WPU's Crystal Alston who pulled her team to within two at the line. Yet another Avenging Angel miscue gave the ball back to Peace with 24 seconds left down by just two.

Both coaches needed a timeout to reset.

A throw in from the baseline put the ball in the corner, but Bailey blocked the Pacers's first attempt. Peace held onto the rebound for a second chance, and Simpson found Derrica Jones on the throw in to tie the game at 60 with just five seconds remaining.

Edwards pushed the ball up the floor quickly and appeared tied up by the Pacer defense, but a whistle put Edwards at the line for the win.

The Avenging Angels outshot Peace 43.9% to just 25.8 from the field. With more than twice as many trips to the free throw line, WPU scored 26-of-38 from the stripe, but Meredith outrebounded the Pacers 55-42 in the win.

Edwards led all with 22 points, adding three assists and a pair of steals. Bailey contributed a dozen, including a perfect four-of-four from the free throw line and combined with Laquetta Hairston for eight assists and thirteen rebounds.

Derrica Jones posted a double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and Jordan grabbed eight boards and chipped in nine points.

The Avenging Angels remain home for a USA South doubleheader this weekend beginning with No. 22 Ferrum College Saturday at 2 p.m. Mary Baldwin follows Sunday afternoon with a 2 p.m. tip-off.
