Box Score 2 FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Meredith College volleyball team captured a pair of wins in Saturday's USA South play day. The Avenging Angels opened with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-17) sweep over the Piedmont Lions and pushed past the host Methodist Monarchs in a five-set victory (18-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 15-11).
Elizabeth Pattison hit a blistering .736 from the right side, and Anna Huff hit 8-of-11 to lead Meredith to their first win on the day. Pattison's 18 kills combined with 10 from Karlie Long to lead the match. Emily Hendricks added nine and Huff's eight from the middle were enough to put away the Lions in three.
Hannah Blaylock dished out a match-high 40 assists, and three Avenging Angel defenders combined for 60 percent of Meredith's digs to support the offensive efforts. Emery McGee led with a dozen, Jessica Goodwin notched 11 and Keegan Lynch recorded nine.
Meredith capped off the day with a five-set thriller over the Monarchs. MU finished off the first frame with three winners and an Angel miscue to take a 1-0 lead.
The Avenging Angels finished off set two with a steady and focused effort to tie the match.
MU edged out Meredith in the third frame, but a six-point run in the middle of set four spread the gap wide enough to help the Angels reset the score and force a deciding set.
Meredith scored the first five points in the fifth frame and forced the Monarchs to whistle for a break in the action. MU put up a fight but would not recover.
Long led all with 34 kills, adding 14 digs. Hendricks tallied 11 winners, and Jasmine Aguinaldo led with six blocks to go along with eight kills. Blaylock dished out a match-high 55 assists, and McGee gathered 18 digs in the win.
Meredith travels to N.C. Wesleyan Wednesday evening before heading South to battle with that division's top two teams, Maryville and Covenant, next weekend.
