Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College volleyball Avenging Angels finished off cross-town rival William Peace University in four sets in Thursday's USA South action. Elizabeth Pattison hit 11-of-19, and middles Jasmine Aguinaldo and Anna Huff recorded four stuffs apiece to lead Meredith to victory.
The Avenging Angels opened the match with a quick 6-2 lead and extended that advantage to six. A trio of unforced errors allowed the Pacers to pull back to within two at 12-10, but Huff led MC on a 6-1 run to spread the gap back to seven at 18-11.
Meredith maintained control the rest of the way and secured the one set lead in front of a near capacity crowd.
The Avenging Angels let the momentum slip away during the break and came out flat in the second stanza. The teams swapped positions, and the Pacers took quick control of the set.
Head Meredith Coach Fiona Barkley stopped play with Peace ahead 8-3 to try to settle the Angels. Her team responded and pulled to within one thanks, in part, to a trio of Karlie Long kills.
Two balls later, the Pacer crowd erupted after a block from the Pacer defense ended Meredith's run. The Avenging Angels continued to battle but would not regain their rhythm as Peace reset the match score at ones.
Pattison and Aguinaldo crushed a pair of winners to open set three, and Emily Hendricks paired up with Aguinaldo for a stuff to give Meredith an early 3-0 advantage. A mishandled ball gave the Angels one more point before WPU earned a sideout.
Peace picked up another point before setter Hannah Blaylock scored a point of her own and dished out another ball to Jessica Goodwin to hold on to the advantage.
The Pacers scored two more points before Meredith jumped ahead on an 8-0 service run from Aguinaldo. Peace used both timeouts during the series but never turned the corner as Meredith went on to finish out the set.
A deflated Pacer squad would not recover from the loss, and the Avenging Angels cruised to 25 points to secure the win.
Long led all with 14 kills, adding three digs. Aguinaldo tallied seven kills, five digs, and Blaylock posted six kills to go along with a game-high 34 assists. A trio of Angels finished the night with double-digit digs, including libero Emery McGee with a match-high 16 and defensive specialists Keegan Lynch and Goodwin with 10 apiece.
Pacer Laura Bland led Peace with nine kills, nine digs, and Nicole Phillips tallied nine kills as well. Carson Williams grabbed 11 digs, and Merica Ivey led all with six block assists.
The Avenging Angels enjoy an off weekend before hosting Ferrum College in USA South action Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Fans should wear pink to support Meredith's Dig Pink event.
