Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. - The Triangle Softball Classic concluded Sunday afternoon on a 3-2 Meredith win over Salem College in extra innings. Pennsylvania's Neumann University defeated the Avenging Angels 6-4 to open the day, and the Knights downed the Spirits 10-3 in the Noon game.
Down 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning versus Neumann, shortstop Amanda White launched a homer over leftcenter to put the Avenging Angels on the scoreboard. Ashley Green drilled a ball down the leftfield line for a double, and Lorri Cole moved her to third on a single.
The hitting frenzy led to a Knight's pitching change, but Whitney Williams scored both Green and Cole in the next series.
The Avenging Angels held Neumann in the top of the fifth, and Leah Friedman scored a run in the bottom of the frame to pull Meredith to within one. A defensive battle during the next two innings left Meredith down two runs for the loss.
Rookie pitcher Taylor Lynn Moore took the loss for the Avenging Angels. Amanda Beirne entered in the first and tallied nine strikeouts and five walks. Lauren Wilkie earned the win for the Knights.
Meredith protected the ball better during the nightcap posting just one error in eight innings played.
Williams and Green scored White and Katlyn Johnson in the second and third innings, respectively, but the Spirits tied the game in the top of six.
A scoreless one and one half innings forced an eighth frame. Green was placed on second base thanks to the tiebreaker rule, and an error by the shortstop sent her home during White's at-bat to secure the victory.
Beirne was credited with the her second win with six strikeouts, four walks and a two earned runs. Allie Watkins earned the loss for Salem.
Meredith hosts the 10th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan Marlins in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. at the Meredith field.
