Softball Drops Two-Game Series Versus Panthers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FERRUM, Va. - The Meredith College softball team capped off a USA South weekend with a pair of losses at Ferrum College. After taking game one 2-0, the Panthers scored three in the fifth to secure the second 4-3 for the sweep.

In game one the Avenging Angels failed to advance a runner to first until the top of the fourth inning. Ashley Green singled to right field and Amanda White advanced on a base-on-balls. Both runners moved into scoring position, but Lorri Cole's line drive to left sailed into a Panther glove leaving both runners scoreless.

Ferrum scored in the bottom of the frame to take a 1-0 lead with Meredith's Courtney Saunders leading off in the top of the fifth.

Saunders drilled a double to left and moved to third on a Whitney Williams sacrifice, but the next two Angels left her on base at the end of the frame.

After the Panthers drove in their second run in sixth, Saunders launched her second double of the game down the right field line. The hosts changed pitchers, and FC's Aiyana Lew closed out the game to earn the save.

Meredith outhit the Panthers 11-9 in the nightcap and appeared to be headed for a win.

Ferrum drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the third, and Amanda Beirne struckout the sixth batter to end the inning.

The Panthers made a pitching change, but White led off with a double and moved to third on the throw.

Saunders notched her third double on the day to score White and scored on a Macy Allen single in the next at-bat to give Meredith a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the frame.

The Avenging Angel infield took care of the next three batters to bring Meredith back to the dugout.

With two outs on the board, Ashley Green advanced on a single, and White moved her to third on another two-base hit. Lorri Cole scored Green on a single to extend the Meredith lead to two.

But the Panthers scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Beirne struckout eight batters and walked three as she collected the pair of losses. Ferrum's Emily Taylor earned the game-one shutout, and Amanda Roberts captured the win in the nightcap.

Meredith travels to N.C. Wesleyan Wednesday for a midweek, USA South doubleheader versus the Bishops before hosting Methodist Saturday afternoon.
