Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. - Under cold and gusty weather conditions, the Meredith College softball team swept the visiting Methodist Monarchs in Sunday's USA South action. A 6-1 win in game one, followed by a 9-1 victory in game two leave the Avenging Angels in eighth place in current conference standings.
Meredith allowed Methodist to score first on a single to left in the first inning, but Ashley Green followed in the bottom of the frame with a three-RBI double to right field to give the Angels the lead.
Green added another RBI in the third with a sacrifice fly to score Amanda White.
In the bottom of the fourth, Katlyn Johnson singled up the middle, and Alyssa D'Arco advanced home on an MU misstep to extend the Angel lead to four.
D'Arco scored on another defensive miscue with Courtney Saunders at-bat in the bottom of the sixth to secure the Meredith win.
Amanda Beirne pitched her first of two complete games on the day, allowing seven hits with six strikeouts and three base-on-balls.
Game two started out much the same way with the Monarchs advancing one run home in the top of the first on a single up the middle.
After Meredith left four runners on base in the bottom of the first and second innings, Lorri Cole hit her fifth homer of the season to put the Angels on the board 2-1. Green advanced on a single in the next at-bat and eventually made it home on a trio of wild pitches.
D'Arco tripled down the right field line to extend the Meredith advantage to four before the Angels headed to the field.
Meredith would score four more to end the game early, 9-1, with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Beirne earned her second win on the day, with five strikeouts and a pair of walks.
The Avenging Angels head to Greensboro Tuesday to face the Pride in a USA South doubleheader. The first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
Meredith continues to battle for one of eight invitations to the USA South Conference Tournament. Round one begins Friday, April 11, at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.
