Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Meredith College softball team capped off the regular season campaign with a two-win series over the Guilford Quakers. Amanda Beirne earned her 52nd career win with a 1-0 victory in game one, and rookie pitcher Taylor Lynn Moore claimed her first win with a 7-6 finish in game two.
Catcher Lorri Cole's second-inning home run proved to be the only spark in the defensive battle of the day's opener. Both teams combined for a total of five hits during the first seven innings with Cole's RBI the only run.
Beirne struck out four batters in her sixth shutout on the season.
Game two opened with a 1-0 Quaker lead at the end of the first inning.
Cole led off in the top of the second with a base-on-balls, and Ashley Green followed Cole home with a dinger to right center to give Meredith a 2-1 lead.
But Guilford found their groove in the bottom of the frame scoring five runs on five hits to regain the lead, 6-2.
After a scoreless third inning, the Meredith bats revved up to take the lead in the fourth. Katlyn Johnson and Macy Allen each advanced on a single, and Courtney Saunders walked to load the bases. USA South Player of the Year Amanda White scored all three runners with a double to right center. Cole singled on the new Guilford pitcher to score White, and the Angels claimed a 7-6 lead to secure the win.
Moore faced 22 batters in her eighth appearance and struck out one in the win. Beirne entered in the bottom of the fifth to earn her first save on the season.
The Avenging Angels open the USA South Conference Tournament Friday as the fifth seed. Meredith will face #4 Ferrum at 9 a.m. at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.
