Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College volleyball team cruised past the visiting N.C. Welseyan Bishops 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-20) in USA South action Wednesday night. Roxboro, North Carolina sophomore Karlie Long recorded her fifth double-double of the season on a game-high 17 kills and 14 digs.
Just prior to the match, Athletic Director Jackie Myers recognized the 2014 USA South Women's Lacrosse Championship team as the Vice-President for College Programs Jean Jackson unveiled the new banner hanging in Weatherspoon. Head Coach Lauren Scott was on hand to introduce the winning Meredith lacrosse team.
A series of errors on both sides of the net left the score tied at four in the opening plays of the match. Meredith took the lead on a kill from Long, but the Bishops reset the score on the next play.
The Avenging Angels finally created a gap on an Emery McGee service run. Elizabeth Pattison notched a pair of kills, and Emily Hendricks recorded her first en route to a 13-8 lead.
Wesleyan battled back to within one, but a pair of unforced errors left the Bishops trailing by three.
Long and Blaylock paired up for a couple of kills to extend the Meredith lead to five at 21-16, but the Bishops continued to fight.
The visitors would stay with the Angels until the end with Meredith holding on for the two-point advantage.
Set two was all Meredith as MCVB hit a blistering .440 with just one error. Long tallied six kills with six more Angels in the mix.
With a two-set lead heading into the third, Meredith exchanged points with Wesleyan through the first 10 points. Long crushed back-to-back plays, and Jasmine Agiunaldo served up a winner as the Avenging Angels put five straight points on the board.
Meredith held on to the five-point advantage until the Bishops rallied to cut the lead to three. Hannah Blaylock landed her second kill of the night to push MC to 24, and a Bishop error sealed the win for the Angels.
Pattison tallied eight kills, and Anna Huff notched five from the middle. Aguinaldo landed four kills with a pair of service aces and three blocks, and Blaylock dished out 36 assists in the win. Freshman Rachel Dawson entered the match in the third set and put down a pair of kills from the outside.
The Avenging Angels hit the road this weekend for a USA South play day at Mary Baldwin. The Pride of Greensboro College join the tri-match Saturday.
