Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - In front of an energetic home crowd, the Meredith College volleyball team swept the visiting Salem Spirits 3-0 Friday evening with set scores of 25-14, 25-12, 25-12. Elizabeth Pattison led with a game-high 11 kills from the rightside, and Hannah Blaylock dished out 32 assists.
The Avenging Angels jumped out to a 10-1 lead in set one before a pair of Salem kills and a mishandled ball from Meredith let the visitors back in the game.
The teams traded points until rookie Anna Huff and Jessica Goodwin put together back-to-back winners to keep Meredith in the lead by nine.
Freshman setter Hannah Blaylock dished out a pair of assists to Karlie Long and another to Jasmine Aguinaldo to push the Avenging Angels to a double-digit spread.
Three of Salem's next four points came from Meredith errors, but the Angels pushed through the miscues to finish off the Spirits 25-14.
Meredith's attack continued to cause problems for Salem, and defensive efforts led by Long and libero Keegan Lynch kept the Avenging Angels out in front for good.
With a two set lead, Head Meredith Coach Fiona Barkley gave her second freshman setter Katie Keen time on the floor with rookie hitters Tyler Bryan and Alex Hafliger. Supported by Katelyn Rall, Aguinaldo and Long, the Avenging Angels finished off Salem with help from a seven-point service run from Aguinaldo to give MCVB a 10-point lead at 17-7.
Rall and Keen paired up for the final kill to secure the 3-0 sweep for the Angels.
Long led all with 17 digs, adding nine kills and three aces. Emily Hendricks and Huff connected for six kills piece, and Aguinaldo tallied four. Blaylock and Lynch gathered eight digs apiece in the win.
The Avenging Angels take the week off from competition before heading to the Roanoke Invitational September 12. Meredith will face Randolph and Southern Virginia Friday, followed by Hollins and the Host Maroons Saturday.
