Basketball Keeps Streak Alive with 58-51 Win Over Monarchs

Box Score

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Meredith College basketball team extended their winning streak to four with a 58-51 victory over the Methodist Monarchs in USA South action Wednesday night. Three Avenging Angels finished in double figures to lead Meredith to the win.

Meredith recovered a Monarch miscue in the opening seconds of play to jumpstart the scoring. After Danielle Lee scored the first bucket, she picked up a steal on the defensive end to return the ball for a Jessi Hayes basket.

Kim Hinton blocked the next Methodist attempt, and Hayes dropped in her second field goal to put the Angels out front 6-0 at 18:04. Hinton capped off the opening run with a layup to extend Meredith's advantage to eight.

The Monarchs' Sydney Bryan put the hosts on the scoreboard with just under 17 minutes to play, but Meredith maintained the advantage through the next 7:39.

Brittaney Rice tied the game on a three-point bucket with just under seven minutes to play, but the Angels headed into the break at halftime with a five-point deficit.

A seven-point run to open the second 20 minutes of play reclaimed Meredith's lead at 15:20.

Methodist slipped back in the lead for the next 2:14 before a Raven Gregory jumper tied the game on the seventh occasion with 11:46 remaining in regulation.

Hayes forced a turnover on the next play and drove in for a layup to give the Angels a two-point lead. She scored 13 points in the second period, including six-of-six from the free throw line, to help Meredith finish off the win.

Hayes led all with 17 points, and Rice recorded 14, including three-of-five from three-point range. Lee capped off the double-digit scoring for Meredith with 11 points, adding four steals and six rebounds.

Methodist's Monique Lofton and Ayanna Pegues scored 14 apiece in the loss.

The Avenging Angels take the weekend off before hosting N.C. Wesleyan next Wednesday evening. Cross-town rival William Peace follows one week later in Weatherspoon Gymnasium.
