Box Score LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Led by freshmen Gabi Jessup and Stephanie Girard, the Meredith College basketball team earned a 67-58 win at Covenant Saturday. Today's victory keeps the Avenging Angels in the lead in USA South North division standings with a 6-2 conference record.
With seven three-point field goals in the first period, a combined five from Jessup and Girard, Meredith carried an 11-point advantage into the locker room at the half.
The Angels opened up the second half with a 13-3 run in the first five minutes to extend their lead to 21. But the Scots managed to stifle that run with a 12-5 series during the next 6:31 of play.
Still up by 17 points, Kim Hinton picked up a steal and passed off to Diana Owens. Owens found Chandler Hines on the perimeter for her first of two consecutive three-point buckets to keep the Avenging Angels out front.
Covenant called for a timeout and put together back-to-back layups to cut the lead quickly to 13 points at 4:20. During the next 1:55 the Scots cut Meredith's lead to single digits for the first time since the early moments of the half.
Rattled by the hosts, a Meredith misstep gave the ball back to Covenant. But rookie Ashley Hudson picked up a steal and finished off the play with a pair of free throws to stifle the Scots' momentum.
Covenant drilled a three-pointer on the other end, but Raven Gregory countered with a second chance effort to finish the scoring in the final seconds of play.
Jessup and Girard came off the bench to lead Meredith with nine points apiece, each adding a pair of assists. Hines and Nicole Miller added eight each, and Hinton led all with 11 rebounds.
Four Scots finished with double-digit points, including a game-high performance from Aleigha Williams with 13.
Meredith hosts cross-town rival William Peace in a 7 p.m. tip-off Wednesday evening in Weatherspoon Gymnasium.
