Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. — The Meredith College Avenging Angels basketball team fell to the Greensboro Pride 67-51 in USA South action Sunday afternoon. Chandler Hines and Jessi Hayes led the Angels with 13 points apiece, but it would not be enough as the Pride forced 29 Meredith turnovers during 40 minutes of play.
Greensboro jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter. Marla Crawford led the visitors with five points in the period, as the Avenging Angels could not adjust to the defensive pressure by the Pride.
GC would continue scoring in the second quarter as they used a 14-4 run to take a commanding 21-8 lead early in the frame. Meredith would fight back as Hayes and Hines began to convert on offensive opportunities for the Angels.
Hines led Meredith in the first half with 10 points, three assists, and three rebounds. Hayes also picked up where she left off during the team's last game in which she scored 21 points by adding two three pointers before the half ended with the Angels down by ten, 33-23.
The third quarter began with Meredith's
Laquetta Hairston hitting a three-pointer to start the offense. But Greensboro began to pull away as they went on an 11-2 run to carry a 19-point lead into the fourth quarter.
The Pride would maintain the advantage as guard Alyssa Carbone led the offense with six points in the final quarter en route to the 16-point victory for the visitors.
Kim Hinton added seven points and 11 rebounds in the paint for the Angels. Hairston also finished the game with seven points and one steal.
Meredith falls to 2-5 on the year as they prepare to travel to the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 29. The Avenging Angels face the Mount Union Raiders at 6 p.m. Tuesday and follow with Williams College at Noon Wednesday.
