Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith College softball rookie Eran Artigues drilled a grand slam homer in her collegiate debut to help the Angels secure a 7-4 win over the visiting Guilford Quakers. Guilford capped off the non-conference doubleheader with a 5-0 shutout over the Avenging Angels in game two.
Guilford took an early 3-0 lead in the opening game, when Artigues stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the fourth to hit her first home run on the day.
Freshman pitcher Taylor Jackson and the Meredith defense took care of Guilford in the top of the fifth to send the Avenging Angels back to the dugout.
Erica Occena advanced on a base on balls, and Katlyn Johnson pushed her to second on a single down the left field line. Brittany Bucklin loaded the bases with another walk forcing the Quakers to change pitchers, but Amanda White scored another run with an infield single.
A misstep in the Guilford infield advanced the runners again to tie the score at threes. With two outs on the scoreboard and the bases loaded, Artigues ripped her second collegiate home run to secure the win.
The Meredith bats were less productive in game two, and combined with a trio of errors, left the Angels with the loss.
Jackson earned the win in game one allowing six hits with three earned runs and four strikeouts. White recorded the loss in game two allowing five hits with a pair of earned runs and four walks in 3.1 innings pitched, and Jackson closed out the game facing 13 batters with four strikeouts and one base on balls.
Guilford's Maggie Schaffer posted her first loss on the season in game one, and Tyler Miles earned the win.
The Avenging Angels head to Virginia Wesleyan next weekend for another non-conference doublheader before hosting the Grand Slam Softball Classic at the end of the month.
