Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, N.C. - The Meredith College softball team earned a pair of five-inning shutouts Tuesday as the team defeated the Bay Path Wildcats 8-0 and Cairn University 17-0 in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. Brittany Bucklin tallied five hits on the day to lead the Angels.
The Avenging Angels jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning on five walks, aggressive baserunning and a double to center from rookie Janie Robinson.
Pitcher Amanda White struckout three in the top of the second to hold the Wildcats scoreless in the second, and the infield kept Bay Path off the board in the third.
Sarah Watson drove in her first of four RBI on the day in the third inning to advance the Meredith lead to six.
In the bottom of the fourth, Annunziata advanced on a fielder's choice, and White sent her home on a triple down the right field line. Eran Artigues notched a RBI-single in the next at-bat, and the Meredith defense held Bay Path scoreless in the top of the fifth to end the game early.
White earned the win with four innings pitched. She allowed just one hit with three base-on-balls and four strikeouts. Wildcat Maria Carta recorded the loss.
Meredith's afternoon game versus the Cairn Highlanders turned into a hitting clinic for the Avenging Angels. Watson notched a pair of triples, and Alyssa D'Arco drilled a ball to left field for an in-the-park home run.
The Angels capitalized on six missteps from the Highlanders to cruise past Cairn for the easy win.
After striking out three batters versus Bay Path in her one inning pitched, Taylor Jackson struck out a dozen more in the victory over Cairn. She held the Highlanders to just one hit in five innings for her seventh win on the season.
The Avenging Angels face off with the Pittsburg-Greensburg Bobcats at 9:30 a.m. and follow with Gettysburg College in day-two of their Myrtle Beach spring break trip. The team is slated to continue with the USA South schedule over the weekend.
