Box Score 2 YORKTOWN, Va. - In Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader with the Christopher Newport Captains, ranked 10th nationally in the latest NFCA Division III poll, Meredith College dropped both games to fall to 12-6 overall. CNU improved to 7-4.
Meredith opened the day on a leadoff double from Maria Annunziata, and Amanda White drove her in on a RBI-double to left to put the Angels on the board. But a five-run series in the bottom of the frame surged the Captains into the lead. Erica Occena scored unearned in the top of three, but CNU would score four more in the bottom of the inning to pull out of reach.
The Angels scored their first run in game two thanks to a pair of Christopher Newport missteps and recorded their first hit in the fifth inning to add one more. But the Captains posted their second five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth frame to maintain momentum for the eventual sweep.
Seven Angels recorded a hit in the first game, including a third double from Alyssa D'Arco, but the dozen runners left on base left Meredith trailing the Captains after the first frame. Taylor Jackson took the loss for Meredith pitching just 0.2 innings with White finishing out the game. Krista Lewis earned her fourth win with a complete game for the Captains.
Katlyn Johnson led Meredith in game two with a pair of hits, Janie Robinson drilled a double down the right field line in the fifth inning and Sarah Watson singled in the seventh to keep Meredith's bats alive just a little longer.
Jackson recorded the loss in game two after four innings, and Brittany Bucklin stepped in to face 10 batters in the final two innings. CNU's Hanah Marshall earned the win in her complete game pitched.
Meredith returns to conference play Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader versus league leader Averett University. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Cougar Field.
