Box Score 2 DEMOREST, Ga. - Meredith College softball dropped two games versus the Piedmont Lions Saturday afternoon in a USA South doubleheader, 11-8, 12-4. The Avenging Angels outhit Piedmont 14-7 in game one and remained strong with eight more in the nightcap but could not hold back the Lions.
A two-RBI single from Sarah Watson, followed by a three-run homer from Amanda White, pushed the Angels ahead 5-2 in the top of the fourth in game one.
In the top of the fifth, Eran Artigues advanced on a single and moved to the corner in the next two at-bats. She scored on a wild pitch to extend the Meredith lead to four.
PC left two runners on base in the bottom of the frame, and Meredith added a seventh run in the top of six. Katlyn Johnson singled and Lauren Marbrey pushed her to third on a double in the next at-bat. Brittany Bucklin scored Johnson to widen the gap to five.
In the bottom of the frame, Meredith loaded the bases on a trio of base-on-balls and PCs Abby Smith drove in two on a double to right. Another walk followed by a two-run single pulled the Lions to within one and aggressive base running scored two more to give Piedmont a one-run lead heading into the seventh.
Courtney Saunders doubled in the top-seven, and Alyssa D'Arco sacrificed to move Saunders to third. Saavy running brought Saunders home, but a pair of strikeouts left the door open for PC.
With one out recorded in the bottom of the frame, Piedmont's Smith crushed a three-run homer to end the game early.
Meredith opened game two with a pair of RBI-singles in the top of the third to take an early three-run lead, but, once again, the Piedmont bats responded.
PC scored six runs on five hits to assume a 6-4 advantage heading into the fifth, and a pair of three-run innings secured the early win for the Lions.
Originally scheduled for last week, Meredith hosts the Ferrum Panthers Tuesday afternoon in a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader. The team remains home Friday, April 3, for Senior Day versus N.C. Wesleyan. Follow the action live HERE.
