Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - Outside hitters Karlie Long and Emily Hendricks led the Meredith College volleyball team to a 3-1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-17) victory over the visiting William Peace Pacers. The packed home crowd gave the Angels a lift after a first set loss to finish off WPU and claim sole ownership of second place in current USA South Conference North division standings.
Meredith opened the match scoring three consecutive points, but Peace battled back to tie the set with consecutive stuffs to swing the momentum. The Angels countered and the back-and-forth pattern continued.
The Pacers held their first lead at 12-11 after a 4-0 rally that forced Head Volleyball Coach Fiona Barkely to call for a timeout to settle her team. The Angels responded scoring a trio of points, but WPU's Laura Bland scored back-to-back points to put Peace back in front. Four more lead changes left the Pacers in front for the win.
Peace scored the first point of the second frame before dropping the next four on series of unforced errors. Long and Blaylock connected for a winner, but WPU managed to even the score at fives.
Long landed a blast, and Aguinaldo stuffed one on her own, as Meredith put together a four-point run to lead 9-5. Another Pacer series evened the score at 10s, but Hendricks and Alex Hafliger each landed a kill to end the rally.
A WPU error followed by back-to-back service aces from Keegan Lynch kept Meredith in front as the Avenging Angels finally found their rhythm. With a 16-13 lead the Angels allowed Peace to score just two points the rest of the set.
Meredith settled in and opened the third frame with a 10-3 advantage. The Pacers pulled to within two at 13-11, but MCVB spread the gap back to four with help from another Long/Blaylock winner. The teams traded points leaving Meredith up by three 20-17, when Lynch re-entered the match.
A third service ace from Lynch followed by a kill in the deep corner earned Meredith the win for a 2-1 match lead.
Peace remained close early in the fourth set until Elizabeth Pattison and Aguinaldo stuffed a ball to send the Angels on a four-point rally for a 17-12 advantage. Three consecutive MCVB attack errors let the Pacers pull back to within one.
With Aguinaldo at the service line, the Angels put on a seven-point show for the fans capped off by a solo stuff and kill from Pattison to finish off Peace for the win.
Pattison led the Angels with seven blocks, adding seven kills, and Hafliger finished with nine winners in the middle. Aguinaldo notched seven kills, five blocks, and Blaylock led all with 44 assists. In addition to her trio of service aces, Lynch led MCVB with 11 digs.
Bland led the Pacers with 10 kills, and Merica Ivey tallied five blocks, eight kills. Carson Williams led all with 19 digs in the loss.
The Avenging Angels travel to Fayetteville Saturday for a USA South play day. Meredith opens with Mary Baldwin at Noon and will face off with the Pride immediately following. Follow the action live HERE.
