Angels Control the Paint in 62-47 Win Over William Peace

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Meredith College Avenging Angels basketball team defeated crosstown rivals William Peace 62-47 Tuesday evening. Jessi Hayes and Raven Gregory led the team with 17 and 14 points, respectively, as they both recorded double-doubles on the night. Meredith controlled the paint as the team out-rebounded Peace 61-35.

The game began with intense defense from the Pacers as the visitors jumped out to a seven-point lead late in the first quarter. The pressure proved problematic for the Angels as they could only muster 12 points before the break to give WPU a 20-12 lead heading into the second period.

The second quarter was another story as the Avenging Angels went on a 13-2 run to swing the momentum. Behind the play of Hayes, who had seven points and six assists in the first half, Meredith shot 36 percent from the floor and out-rebounded William Peace 33-15. The Pacers struggled to match-up with the Angels in the paint and took 14 three pointers, only making two, in the first half to try to compensate for their lack of success near the basket.

The teams came out of the break and continued to play a tough back and forth game. Peace recovered from their shooting slump to shoot 30 percent from the floor in the quarter but it would not be enough to overcome the inside play of the Avenging Angels. Meredith scored 28 of their 62 points in the paint as Gregory and Kim Hinton controlled the interior.

The turning point for Meredith occurred when Hayes and Gregory made back-to-back shots to take a commanding 15-point lead with 4:32 left in regulation. The Angels would not look back as they stretched the lead to 19 with 2:02 remaining.

Hinton recorded eight points, 12 rebounds as she teamed up with Gregory and Hayes to control the inside and helped contribute to Meredith's 15 second-chance points on the night. Chandler Hines scored 12 points, including two long threes and a four-point play. Her command at the point tonight left the Angels poised and under control during a traditional battle of crosstown rivals.

Susannah Sykes and Brittany Boykin led the Pacers with 14 and 13 points respectively, as Sykes was a threat from three-point range the entire game.

Meredith goes to 4-9 on the year as they prepare to travel to LaGrange on Saturday afternoon and Huntingdon on Sunday. Both games tip off at 2:00 p.m. (EST). Follow the action live HERE.
