Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- With a perfect USA South record on the line and five seniors playing their final regular season match in Weatherspoon Gym, the Meredith College volleyball team downed the visiting N.C. Wesleyan Bishops in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) Tuesday evening. MCVB has dropped just one set in conference play this season.
Head Coach Fiona Barkley and her team, along with Athletic Director Jackie Myers, honored seniors Jessica Goodwin, Karlie Long, Keegan Lynch, Emery McGee, and Elizabeth Pattison prior to the match.
The Battling Bishops challenged Meredith repeatedly throughout the three set-match as both defenses worked tirelessly to keep the rally live. Meredith struggled to shake Wesleyan until midway through the first frame thanks to a series of Bishop miscues and a kill from Long to move the Angels into the lead 17-14. The front line stepped up to finish off the visitors by seven.
Set two moved at a similar pace with the teams even at 12. Alex Hafliger and Long landed back-to-back winners, and Goodwin served an ace to give the Angels back the lead. Long and Caroline Corey scored two more points to extend Meredith's advantage, and the Angels held on to the momentum for a two-set advantage.
MCVB finished off N.C. Wesleyan hitting .429 in the third and final frame. Passing efforts led by Lynch, McGee, and Goodwin allowed Hannah Blaylock to have her way with the offense, and she collected a match-high 36 assists.
Lynch led with 15 digs, and Goodwin and McGee notched 9 apiece. Long finished with a match-high 10 kills, and Hafliger and Corey combined for 17. Pattison tallied seven kills on the right side with no errors on the night.
Meredith will travel to Averett Saturday to possibly play for the USA South East Division Championship and a number one seed in next week's league tournament. Both teams remain undefeated in conference play with AU playing tomorrow night. The strong rivalry between the programs will likely result in an all out battle in AU's Grant Center beginning at Noon.
