Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Meredith College basketball Angels dropped Monday's non-conference action at Guilford (5-0) 77-48 falling to 0-4 early this season. Rookie Amy Rhoney led the Avenging Angels with 14 points, seven rebounds in the loss.
The Angels opened strong with an 11-9 advantage at 5:21, but a two-minute scoring lull allowed the Quakers to edge into the lead on a pair of buckets from GC's Heaven Walters.
Rhoney and Maddie Gladwell knocked down three-of-four free throws later in the period, but a trio of turnovers left Meredith trailing by five at the end of the quarter.
Meredith continued to battle in the second stanza with Jessi Hayes and Brittany Preston drilling a pair of three pointers to keep the Angels in the mix, but Guilford hit three buckets inside the paint late in the period to enter the midway intermission with a 10-point advantage.
Rhoney dropped in Meredith's only two jump shots in the third period, and the Quakers took advantage of the drought to extend their lead to 22 with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Meredith continued to battle but would run out of time down the stretch.
Hayes nearly missed another double-double with 10 points, nine rebounds, and Rhoney added five blocks to her totals. Preston and Gladwell finised with seven apiece. The Angels protected the ball better tonight with just 21 turnovers, but Guilford held their own missteps to just eight on the night and hit 41.5 percent from the floor for the win.
Three Quakers notched double-digit scoring with Anais Weatherly leading all with 16 on the night.
Meredith travels to Salem, Virginia Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff with the Maroons. Roanoke picked up a pair of wins in their tournament versus Goucher and Salem and edged the USA South's Averett Monday 78-77 heading into this week's non-conference match-up. Follow the live action HERE.
