Box Score SALISBURY, Md. -- In Friday afternoon's season opener at the Salisbury University Classic, Meredith College fell 3-1 to the host Seagulls. Down by three in the final minutes of the match, Ellice Johnson flipped a shot to the far right corner of the box to put the Avenging Angels on the board.
With veteran goal keeper Jaisa Loch in the box, Meredith held the four-time Capital Athletic Conference champs to a 1-0 lead at the half. Led by sophomore returner Kirstie King and new transfer Molly Thomas, the Angels defended nine shots with one save from Loch to ward off the Sea Gulls attack.
But the veteran squad wore down Meredith's young team and scored two goals midway through the second half.
Meredith McCarty and Jessica Wallace each took a pass at the net for Meredith, but the Angels could not find a way around Salisbury's defense.
Brook Verburg entered the match late in the second period to record 11:39 in-goal for Meredith. Hope Knussman recorded the win for Salisbury.
Due to stormy conditions from Hurrican Hermine, Saturday's matches have been cancelled. The Avenging Angels return to the field Friday, Sept. 9 versus Southern Virginia on the campus of Guilford College.
