RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College basketball Angels shutout USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan in a 74-61 thriller to claim their first win on the season. Jessi Hayes with 37 and Chandler Hines with 17 recorded impressive career-high point totals to lead the Avenging Angels.

Hayes and Hines could not miss Saturday afternoon knocking down a combined 10-of-13 from behind the arc. Both players recorded career-high field goal totals, Hayes tied her career-high with five three pointers, and Hines set a new personal record with five threes.

Hines made her mark in the first period with four long jumpers to send the teams into the second frame even at 18.

In the second stanza Brittany Preston dished off twice to Maddie Gladwell for layups and found Hayes behind the three point line for her first three on the game. After a Bishop miscue with just fifteen seconds left in the half, Chandler Hines found Hayes behind the line once more to give the Angels a one-point lead heading into the break.

Meredith continued to punish the visitors after the intermission as Hayes and Hines went three-for-three from three-point land in the third period to extend the lead to 12 with just 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

Wesleyan ramped up their defensive pressure to force seven Meredith turnovers, but the Angels maintained their composure down the stretch to secure the win.

Amy Rhoney led the game with 10 rebounds, three blocks, adding six points from inside. Preston finished with five assist, three points, and Courtney Roulhac dished out a pair of assists to go along with five points.

Timyra Staton recorded a double-double with 14 points, 10 boards, and four assists to lead the Battling Bishops.

The Avenging Angels take on league foe Methodist University Sunday afternoon in Weatherspoon Gymnasium in a 2 p.m. tipoff.
