Box Score STAUNTON, Va. -- The Meredith College basketball team defeated Mary Baldwin University 62-49 Sunday afternoon in USA South action. Kirstie King and Maddie Gladwell led a second and third quarter surge by the Avenging Angels to capture the team's second victory on the season.
The Fighting Squirrels held a three point advantage at the end of the first 10 minutes of play, but Meredith shifted the momentum during the next frame. Meghan Pleasants scored inside off her own offensive rebound midway through the second stanza, and Chandler Hines netted her third three-pointer to put the Angels out front 21-19.
MBU reclaimed a brief lead on the next play, but King took over Meredith's offense with 3:14 left in the half. She scored seven points in less than a minute to push the Avenging Angels into the lead 28-22 with 2:21 remaining in the period. Amy Rhoney extended the lead to eight just before the intermission.
Hines opened the third stanza with another three to maintain Meredith's attack. Gladwell entered the game at 6:20 and drained back-to-back threes with less than three minutes remaining to give the Angels a 15-point advantage. Brittany Preston closed out the period with a jumper assisted by Jessi Hayes.
In the final frame Hayes and Rhoney combined for 11 points to hold off a late game effort led by Baldwin's leading scorer Kearsten Brazeal.
Rhoney led MC with 13 points, 11 rebounds for her third career double-double, and Hines finished with 12 points on four-of-six shooting from behind the arc. King scored a career-high 10 points with four steals, and Gladwell notched 8 points with three boards. Hayes tallied eight points with a game-high five assists.
Brazeal finished with 13 points to lead the Squirrels.
The Avenging Angels remain on the road next week but stay close to home with a pairing across town at William Peace Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Follow the action live HERE.
