Big Hits at Guilford Lead to 7-6 Angels Win; Game Two Suspended

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A seventh-inning, three-run homer from Eran Artigues led to a 7-6 Meredith College victory over the host Guilford Quakers Wednesday afternoon. Game two was suspended due to darkness at 9-9 in the bottom of the fourth frame. A combined eight home runs, six doubles in 46 hits defined the exciting doubleheader.

Game 1
The Avenging Angels drove in the first run of the day on a single from Julia Allsbrook. She scored Brittany Bucklin and moved Maria Annunziata to third. Guilford edged into the lead in the bottom of the frame with the first two-run homer on the day.

Two solo home runs from the Quakers in the third extended their lead to three, but Meredith continued to battle back. In the top of the fourth, Artigues led off with a walk, and Allsbrook and Rachel Peel loaded the bases with a pair of hits. Erica Occena's single through the middle drove in two to pull the Angels back to within one.

Meredith's defense handled the next four Quaker batters, and Bryce Smith kept the bats moving in the sixth with a double in the right center gap. Occena moved Smith to the corner, and Kelsey Mabe drove in the run to even the game.

Guilford stranded two runners in the bottom of the inning, and Artigues' dinger put the Avenging Angels out front by three heading into the bottom of the seventh. Quaker Anna Wolfe scored two on a one-out double, but the Meredith outfielders took care of the next two batters to secure the victory.

Payton Aldridge recorded her first collegiate win allowing four hits with two earned runs, two walks, and one strikeout in 4.1 innings. Taylor Jackson completed the game with three strikeouts, two walks, and four earned runs. Guilford's Courtney Lackey entered in relief midway through the fourth and recorded the loss.

Game 2
Darkness ended game two early but not before the Avenging Angels posted nine RBI on nine hits, including a trio of homers from Allsbrook, Annunziata, and Smith.

Taylor Jackson pitched the first three and one-third innings. Rookie Emily Clemmons relieved Jackson to face the next four Quakers, and Morse was subbed in just before the game was suspended.

The Avenging Angels open the USA South schedule Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader versus N.C. Wesleyan, followed by a two-game series Sunday versus the Methodist Monarchs. Follow the live action HERE.
