Softball Opens Spring Break with Split

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Meredith College softball team opened spring break with a split in day-one action of The Spring Games. Starting with a 4-0 victory over Salve Regina, the Avenging Angels lost 5-2 to the Arcadia Knights.

Kelsey Mabe led the day with three hits and three runs scored, and Rachel Peel posted a pair of RBIs versus the Seahawks.

Meredith peppered four runs through six innings to down SRU with Peel's first RBI on a sac-fly in the her first at-bat of the day. Mabe led off with a double down the left field line and stole third to set up for Peel. Drake advanced on an error in the third and scored on a Peel single for a 2-0 Angels advantage.

Mabe reached first on another Seahawk miscue in the fifth, stealing second to ready for Alyssa Drake's RBI-single to right field. And Susanne Taylor led off the sixth with a solo home run to close out the scoring. Cecilia Coleman reached first with a hit to right field but was left on base at the end of the frame.

Sarah Gundlach earned her first career win with a six-hit shutout, striking out four Seahawks and walking one. Courtney Latta earned the loss for SRU.

The Avenging Angels did not fare as well in game two, allowing the Knights to score five runs unearned for the win. Meredith loaded the bases in the first, and Charley Cox scored Mabe on a sacrifice fly to left field. In the seventh Anna Goldman and Mabe notched a pair of singles, and Bryce Smith scored Goldman on a single through the middle.

Payton Aldridge earned the loss, allowing six hits and two runs in 21 batters with five strikeouts, three walks. Gundlach entered in the fifth to face a dozen batters with one hit, three runs, and three walks. Kylee Schwind posted the win for Arcadia.

Meredith meets the Kean Cougars of Union, N.J., and the Carnegie Mellon Tartans Tuesday beginning at 9:45 a.m. in Kissimmee.
