Softball Drops Two in Final Day of Florida Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Meredith College softball team dropped both games in Thursday's final day of the Florida series. The Thomas More Saints handled MCSB 8-2, and the Wooster Fighting Scots edged Meredith 2-1.

vs. Thomas More
The Saints put up four runs on three hits with help from a Meredith throwing error to take the lead in the third inning. Susanne Taylor launched a two-RBI home run to left in the bottom of the frame, scoring Bryce Smith who advanced after being hit by a pitch. TMU scored a fifth in the next inning and added three more in the fifth to advance their lead to six.

Meredith advanced two batters in the fourth with a walk from Savannah Pierce and a TMU misstep for Anna Goldman. Pierce made her way to third but was left on base. The Avenging Angels' next opportunity came in the sixth starting with a single from Cecilia Coleman. Pierce pushed Coleman to third with a double to right, but both runners were left unscored.

The MCSB defense held TMU in the seventh and Madison Hamilton and Smith advanced on a pair of hits, but neither made it home.

Payton Aldridge recorded the loss facing 21 batters in the first four innings. Taylor traded places with Aldridge in the fifth, and Gianna Buccellato finished out the game allowing just one hit and no runs in the final two frames. Kianah Towe earned the win for the Saints.

vs. Wooster
The Fighting Scots wasted no time taking the lead in the afternoon game, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first. A walk from Taylor in the fourth marked the only offensive activity for Meredith until the sixth when Hamilton drilled a double to left. Alyssa Drake pushed Hamilton to third on a groundout, and a Smith single scored Meredith's only run on the game.

Coleman and Chloe Johnson both put the ball in play in the seventh, advancing to scoring position but were left on base at the end of the game.

Sarah Gundlach pitched a complete game for her third career loss, and Wooster's Katie Agatucci earned the win.

The Avenging Angels will make their way back to Raleigh in time for a non-conference doubleheader Saturday versus the USA South's West Division Piedmont Lions.
