16-10 Victory Over #25 St. Mary's (Md.) a First for MC Lax

St. Marys' City, Md. -- Meredith College lacrosse knocked off nationally ranked St. Mary's College (Md.) 16-10 Sunday afternoon. Holly Hite led with 14 draw controls, four caused turnovers, and Lilia Cruz posted six goals.

Trailing 9-8 with just under 18 minutes left in regulation, the Avenging Angels scored 9 of the last 10 goals for the sweet victory.

SMC jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but Cruz ended the run with a goal at 17:05. The teams exchanged goals through the rest of the period, leaving MC Lax trailing by two at the half.

The battle continued into the early minutes of the second stanza, and Julie Capretti netted a free position shot to pull to within one. Hite grabbed the draw, and Olivia Higgs scored a second to even the match at seven. Seahawk leading scorer Kate Bartholomew found the box on the next two St. Mary's goals to retake the lead 9-7.

Head Coach Lauren Scott called for a timeout, and the Avenging Angels assumed control of the match. Sarah Arbes won the draw control, and Henley Peatross scored an eight-meter goal. Olivia Higgs followed with another free position shot, and Cruz netted back-to-back-to-back unassisted points to extend Meredith's advantage to 12-9. Hite and Cruz netted two more before St. Mary's interrupted the series.

Cruz and Higgs finished punched two more goals to push Meredith's lead to five. The Seahawks called for a break in the action, but a pair of Haley Whitfield stops prevented any impact on the final score.

Higgs scored four and Peatross two. Natalie Purcell interrupted two Seahawk plays, and Sarah Arbes grabbed three draws, two ground balls with one caused turnover.

Joy Deitrich started in goal for the Angels with two saves, and Whitfield earned the win recording 10 stops in her fifth season victory. Emma Brown earned her fifth loss for St. Mary's with 11 saves on the day.

The Avenging Angels travel to Averett Wednesday afternoon for a midweek contest before hosting Randolph-Macon Saturday in a non-conference contest.
