Softball Drops Two to Quakers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. -- After a nearly two and one half week break from competition due to rainy weather, Meredith College returned to action Tuesday afternoon in a makeup with the Guilford Quakers. Guilford won the first 12-4 in five innings and slipped past the Angels in game two for an 8-3 victory.

Game 1
Avenging Angel Payton Aldridge opened the game in the circle for the first time this season and endured a solo home run on the first at bat. The Quakers scored one more to hold a 2-1 lead through the first four innings of the day but extended that lead in the fourth with six hits, seven runs. With the bases loaded after six at-bats, Gianna Buccellato relieved Aldridge. Meredith finally closed out the frame on a line drive double play with Emily Velazquez and Susanne Taylor.

Bryce Smith singled in the bottom of the stanza but was put out in a double play to turn the inning. The Quakers rallied again in the top of seven to push their lead to 12, but Meredith refused to back down. An infield error placed Madison Hamilton on first, and she picked up another base on a wild pitch. Anna Goldman placed runners on the corners with a single to right, and Mabe scored both on a double to left center. Alyssa Drake followed with her own extra base hit to score Mabe, but the Quakers caught her at home two batters later to end the game early.

Game 2
Sarah Gundlach started game two, taking care of Guilford's first three batters. Mabe and Drake each advanced on a single, and Smith earned the first RBI of the inning. Chloe Johnson pushed Drake to third, who scored on a wild pitch for Meredith's second run of the game. A pair of Guilford miscues allowed the Angels to score a third before heading to the dugout.

With Gundlach directing, the Meredith defense handled the Quakers during the next two frames but left four runners on base to hold with a 3-0 advantage. Guilford rallied in the fourth to take a one run lead, but the Avenging Angels held GC through the next two stanzas. Guilford rallied again in the seventh, scoring four more runs on six hits, including a sac fly and a pair of doubles, before Taylor entered in relief to close out the frame. Rachel Peel's solo hit in the bottom of the frame left the Angels with another loss.

The Avenging Angels close out the week Thursday playing host to nationally ranked Christopher Newport before heading south for spring break. The first pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
