Softball Angels Fall to 0-6 with pair of Losses in Georgia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DEMOREST, Ga. -- Meredith College recorded a pair of losses to USA South foe Piedmont College in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. Sarah Gundlach and Myah Morse each earned a loss in the circle for the Angels.

The Lions recorded a pair of big innings to secure today's doubleheader sweep beginning with a first-inning four-run rally to open the day. MCSB finally reached the scoreboard in the fifth on a one-out RBI-single from Alyssa Drake. She scored Savannah Pierce who advanced on a double through the right and moved to third thanks to a hit from Kelsey Mabe. Anna Goldman moved Mabe home on an infield groundout to leave MCSB trailing by two at the end of the frame.

Piedmont added a fourth run on a two-out single in the bottom of the frame, leaving the Angels with a significant task heading into the sixth.

Madison Hamilton found her way to first on a two-out single in the sixth but was left stranded as the Lions stepped back up to the plate. PC drove in two in the bottom of the stanza to hold a five-run advantage heading into the final frame.

Pierce led off with a single, and Drake advanced on a hit-by-pitch. Goldman was hit by new pitcher Rachel Oberholtzer to load the bases, and Bryce Smith took another pitch to drive in Meredith's third run. Rookie Tatum Smith crushed a one-out double to right, scoring Goldman and Drake, but starting pitcher Martina Maloch returned to the circle to close out the game on the next at-bat.

Game two opened in favor of the Avenging Angels as Smith recorded a two-out, RBI-single scoring Goldman.

But the Lions recorded a six-run, third-inning rally to regain control of the game. MCSB's Rachel Johnson made her way to third in the the next inning and walked in the fourth but was left stranded in both attempts.

Cecilia Coleman kicked off a flurry of activity in the fifth with a single up the middle, and Mage advanced the runner on a walk. Madison Hamilton scored Coleman with a hit to right field, and Goldman's drive down the right field line drove in Mabe to pull the Angels to within two heading into the bottom of the inning. Piedmont again managed to erase the Angels' effort with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.

PU's Martina Maloch finished off the next six Meredith batters to earn a one-hit save in the win.

The Avenging Angels are slated to host local Raleigh rival Shaw University Thursday, Feb. 27, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
