Box Score 2 FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Meredith College and Methodist required extra innings to finish both games in a two-game USA South series Wednesday in Fayetteville. MU won the first 2-1, and the Avenging Angels scored three in the eighth stanza of game two to win 4-1.
Game 1
The Avenging Angels scored their only run in the day's opener in the sixth frame on a Tatum Smith sacrifice fly. She scored Anna Goldman to tie the Monarchs 1-1. Sarah Gundlach managed MU's next six batters with help from her defense, but MCSB was unable to drive in a run. An infield misstep in the bottom of the eighth allowed the placed baserunner to score giving the hosts the win.
Gundlach earned the loss for Meredith, earning one of two MU runs on two hits and striking out seven. Monarch Brittany Jones claimed the win.
Game 2
In the opening frame, another infield MCSB miscue gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
Meredith's Madison Hamilton evened the score in the fifth with an RBI-single. With Laura Tobin placed on second in the eighth inning, Sarah Manis moved her teammate to the corner with a sacrifice hit. Goldman singled to score the runner and give the Angels a 2-1 advantage. Alyssa Drake reached on a fielder's choice, and Rachel Johnson advanced her to third.
Savannah Talley reached on an infield error, and both runners scored, unearned, to spread the gap to a three-run Meredith lead. Danielle Hunt forced a pair of infield outs and struck out one to end the game in favor of MCSB to complete the split.
Hunt recorded her second win on the season with no earned runs on fur hits, striking out six. Taylor Jones picked up the loss for Methodist.
