Pacers Get the Best of Softball Angels

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College softball Angels dropped a pair of USA South games to rival William Peace Tuesday afternoon, 10-5, 9-0.

Game 1
The Pacers set the tone for the day scoring five quick runs with back-to-back homers in their first two at-bats in the bottom of the first frame. Brie Caldwell handled Peace in the second, and the Avenging Angels finally scored two on a double from Sarah Manis in the third stanza. But the Pacers responded in-kind in the bottom of the frame to maintain a 7-2 advantage.

WPU drove in a run in each of the next two innings, but the Angels rallied again in the sixth. Manis reached first by benefit of an error and made it to third in the next two at-bats. Susanne Taylor drove in the run to close the gap, but another extra-base hit for Peace held back any movement from MCSB.

Caldwell started off the seventh with a double to right, and Mia Staggs put runners on the corners in time for Alyssa Drake to drive in the run on a sac-fly. Another Manis double scored Staggs and forced a Pacer pitching change that ended the game.

Payton Aldridge took the loss for Meredith earning the first three runs. Caldwell struck out five but earned the next five in eight hits. Emily Clemmons pitched the fifth, and Danielle Hunt the sixth.

Game 2
Fallon Wimberly stepped in the circle for game two and held the Pacers back for the first two innings. But Peace found their swing and never looked back.

Madison Hamilton walked in the first and Staggs singled in the third. Nothing in the fourth led to a walk from Kendall Johnson in the fifth, Staggs pushed Johnson to second, but both were left stranded. Three more Pacer runs in the fifth ended the game early in favor of the hosts.

Wimberly collected the loss for the Avenging Angels, earning five runs in seven hits, walking two. Hannah Weigle entered in the fourth and held WPU to one run on three singles, and Clemmons finished the day in the fifth.

Raynee Redington earned the win in game one, and Katherine Murphy pitched a complete game for Peace in the nightcap for her third win on the season.

The Angels will get a re-do when Peace travels to Meredith at the end of April. In the meantime, MCSB heads to Danville Saturday for a two-game series with the Averett Cougars.
