Box Score 2 LaGrange, GA - The Meredith College Softball team swept the Panthers of LaGrange College on Saturday to close out a strong week on the road. The Avenging Angels are headed back to Raleigh after posting a 7-1 record over spring break.
Game 1 - Meredith 9, LaGrange 0
In Game 1 on Saturday, Meredith started the scoring early with two outs in the top of the first inning. Anna Goldman walked, stole second and was moved to third on Alyssa Drake's single through the left side of the infield. After Drake stole second, Fallon Wimberly drove in both runs with a single to left center. Freshman pitcher Alexa Daniel would make quick work of the Panther's offense in the bottom of the first, facing just three batters while striking out two.
The Angels would add another run in the top of the second inning, as Drake singled to the left side once again with bases loaded, scoring Sarah Manis. Daniel would return to the circle in the bottom half of the inning, collecting two more strikeouts. The Panther's would remain hitless through the third inning.
Meredith would rally for three runs in the top of the third inning thanks to some miscues by the Panther's defense and singles by Jessie Woller and Laura Tobin. Anna Goldman drove in the first of her four runs batted in with a sacrifice fly to center. Both teams would go quietly through the fourth inning. Goldman helped put the game out of reach with a three run blast to center field in the fifth inning.
Daniel would finish the game with seven strikeouts, allowing just three baserunners as she earned her first career no-hitter. Macy Harris earned the loss for LaGrange.
Game 2 - Meredith 4, LaGrange 3
With a repeat of the first inning of game one, the Angels once again scored two runs with two outs in the top of the first. Goldman reached on a single through the right side and Drake followed with a triple to right field. The ball was mishandled in the outfield and Drake was able to score on the play.
The Angels would add two more runs to their lead in the top of the third inning as they put the pressure on the Panther's defense. Hard ground balls would result in two infield singles, a few fielder's choices and an error. Goldman would add yet another RBI on the day as she drove in Victoria Negron with a hard single to center.
The Panther offense would remain scoreless through the first two innings off pitcher Daniel Hunt. LaGrange cut the lead to three in the bottom of the third as Abbey Gardner drove in a run with a double to left field. The Panthers would threaten again in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Sarah Gundlach entered in relief and stranded two runners after striking out two.
The score would remain 4-2 until the bottom of the seventh inning when Abby Gardner sent a shot over the centerfield fence for the Panthers to bring the game within one. Gundlach secured the win for the Angels, getting the last out of the game on a ground ball to second base.
The Angels are headed back to Raleigh after collecting 82 hits, 59 runs, 10 doubles,4 triples, 4 homeruns, 52 strikeouts and 7 wins on the week. Meredith will open up conference play on Saturday, March 26th as they travel to Salem College for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
