Box Score Virginia Beach, VA - Meredith College Lacrosse opened the 2022 season on Wednesday night defeating the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan 20-9. The Avenging Angels struck first with a goal from Jessica Dowdy which was quickly followed by a goal from Maya Flake. The Marlins would answer back scoring two goals of their own in the first period. Meredith increased their lead to two, thanks to goals from Arrianna May and Kylie Phillips to close out the first period.
That was as close as the Marlins would get as the Avenging Angels continued to control the game throughout the second period. The Avenging Angels stretched their lead to 8 by the end of the first half.
Jessica Dowdy led the Angels with 5 goals, 2 assists, 6 ground balls and 5 draw controls. Lauryn Turner added 4 goals while collecting 3 ground balls and 1 draw control. Arianna May led Meredith in draw controls with 10 while scoring 2 and adding 2 assists. Tori Witmer, Kylie Phillips, Olivia Verlinden and Maya Flake notched 2 goals each with Ava Spradley adding one more for the Angels.
Mackenzie Bianchi earned the win in goal for Meredith with 3 saves while Madeline Horrell had 2 saves. Kirstin Ivory earned the loss for Virginia Wesleyan with 12 saves.
Meredith will stay on the road for their next match-up as they take on Mary Washington this Saturday at 12:00.
