Box Score 2 Newport News, VA – After a conference double-header yesterday, the Avenging Angel softball team was on the road today for a non-conference match-up with the #1 nationally ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University.
Game 1 - Meredith 3, CNU 11 (5 innings)
Knowing CNU softball is currently leading the nation in multiple offensive stat categories (batting average, home runs, scoring, and slugging percentage); the Avenging Angel defense recognized they would have their work cut out for them. At the end of the second inning, the Captains had secured a 7-0 lead. Nevertheless, Meredith's offense continued to battle at the plate. In the top of the fifth, freshman, Rheanne Burden drove a single to right field. Then sophomore Kendall Johnson hit a double down the left-field line putting Burden in scoring position. Angels' players Sarah Manis, Brie Caldwell, and Anna Goldman each contributed at the plate earning RBI's. The top of the fifth concluded with 4 hits and 3 runs for Meredith. The Avenging Angels' efforts came up short as CNU had 3 hits and 2 runs in the bottom of the inning, closing out the game with an 11-3 final score. Pitchers Emily Clemmons and Danielle Hunt split time in the circle for the Angels.
Game 2 - Meredith 0, CNU 9 (5 innings)
The Avenging Angels were able to hold off CNU in the first inning. Then in the bottom of the second, CNU's bats lit up again for three hits and three runs that include a CNU home run and a triple. Meredith finished the game with hits from Alyssa Drake, Victoria Negron, and Anna Goldman. In the circle for the Angels were pitchers Hannah Weigle and Fallon Wimberly. Meredith would finish the game with nine unanswered runs for a final score of 0-9.
