Box Score 2 Raleigh, NC - The Meredith College softball team split with William Peace University on Tuesday afternoon in a USA South Conference match-up. The Angels entered the day 17-9 overall on the season, tied for 3rd place in the conference standings.
Game 1 - Meredith 1, William Peace 2
Defensive miscues late in the game resulted in the game one loss for Meredith. The Avenging Angels entered the sixth inning with a 1-0 advantage over the Pacers, thanks to an RBI single from Fallon Wimberly in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Logan Ayers reached on a dropped pop up to shortstop. She advanced to third on a fielder's choice as an errant throw sailed over third base, allowing Ayers to score the tying run. Lauren Conway then hit a solo home run to give the Pacers the 2-1. Meredith would go quietly in the top of the seventh, resulting in a game one victory for William Peace.
Sarah Gundlach earned the tough loss in the circle, throwing a complete game, allowing just three hits and no earned runs while striking out four. Meredith scattered six hits and was led by Fallown Wimberly who was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Game 2 - Meredith 8, William Peace 7
The Avenging Angel bats came alive early in game two. In the second inning, Savannah Talley reached on a walk and was moved to third on a double by Jessie Woller. Kendall Johnson's line drive sent Talley home to start the scoring for the Angels. Madison Hamilton moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt and then Laura Tobin was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Meredith. Alyssa Drake stepped up to the plate with bases loaded and delivered an RBI single to bring the score to 2-0.
In the circle for Meredith, Alexa Daniel left two runners stranded in the bottom of the second to keep the score at 2-0. In the top of the third, Meredith would expand their lead to 8-0. Fallon Wimberly got things started with a solo home run to center field, her second of the season. Jessie Woller followed with her second double of the game. Control issues allowed Kendall Johnson to reach on a walk, followed by Madison Hamilton who was hit by a pitch. Laura Tobin brought home Jessie Woller with an RBI single, leaving the bases loaded once again for Alyssa Drake. Drake sent the first pitch of the at bat soaring over the left field fence for a grand slam. Drake would finish the day, her birthday, 3 for 7 with a run scored and 5 RBI.
Meredith would be one strike away from a 5 inning run rule victory when the Pacers would come charging back. William Peace scored two runs, with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Walks, two doubles and another defensive miscue, plated 3 more runs for the Pacers in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Avenging Angel errors would once again allow the Pacers to close the gap before Sarah Gundlach struck out the last batter of the game to secure the win for Meredith.
The Angels return to conference play on Saturday as they travel to Mary Baldwin University.
