Box Score 2 Raleigh, NC - The Meredith College softball team secured a doubleheader sweep of the Southern Virginia Knights on Saturday. Today's wins bring the Avenging Angels overall record to 15-5, 4-2 in the USA South Conference.
Game 1 - Meredith 8, Southern Virginia 0
Meredith started the scoring early as five Avenging Angels crossed the plate in the second inning. Fallon Wimberly led off the inning with a walk. Savannah Talley got the sacrifice bunt down to advance Wimberly to second and Susanne Taylor drove in the first run of the game with a double to left field. Taylor then scored on Laura Tobin's ground ball to second base. The hits continued with two outs, as Sarah Manis and Madison Hamilton hit back to back triples to bring the score to 4-0. Anna Goldman followed with a double to left field, scoring Hamilton.
Sarah Gundlach held the Knights scoreless through five innings, allowing just three hits while striking out six. The Angels pushed another run across in the bottom of the fifth inning when Freshman Jessie Woller blasted a solo shot to left field, the first of her career.
Hannah Weigle entered in relief in the top of the 6th inning, allowing no runs on two hits. The Angels would score again in the bottom of the sixth inning, ending the game early with a final score of 8-0. Anna Goldman walked, stole second and was moved to third on a single by Alyssa Drake. Fallon Wimberly followed with a two RBI double down the right field line for the walk off victory.
Meredith had 13 hits in the game, led by Sarah Manis who was 3-4. Anna Goldman, Alyssa Drake and Jessie Woller had two hits a piece and Wimberly led with two runs batted in.
Game 2 - Meredith 7, Southern Virginia 2
The Knights would strike first in Game 2, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning on two hits, two walks and two errors. The Avenging Angels answered right back in the bottom half of the inning scoring two runs of their own. Mia Staggs led off with a single and was moved to third on a single by Jessie Woller. Woller stole second and Anna Goldman drove in Staggs on a sacrifice fly to left field. Fallon Wimberly earned another RBI as she scored Woller on a single.
Freshmen Alexa Daniel entered the game in relief in the top of the second inning and the score remained tied 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth. Fallon Wimberly recorded her fourth RBI on the day as she singled to bring home Goldman who led off the inning with a single to centerfield.
The Angels would put things out of reach for the Knights in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring four more runs on two hits. Woller and Goldman had two RBI's each in the inning.
Daniel finished the game in the circle for Meredith, allowing just two hits while striking out seven in six innings of releif.
Mia Staggs was 3-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases for the Angels. Anna Goldman had three RBI's on two hits, while Jessie Woller and Fallon Wimberly each added two RBI's on two hits. Meredith had a season high nine stolen bases on the day.
The Angels continue USA South action as they head to Pfeiffer University on Wednesday. Game 1 will begin at 2:00 pm.
