Box Score 2 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Meredith softball program dropped a doubleheader at No. 7 Virginia Wesleyan University in the season opener on Friday afternoon at Broyles Field in TowneBank Park. The Marlins won game one 8-0 in six innings and claimed game two winning 3-0.
The two teams were evenly matched through the opening three innings of the first game. VWU (2-0) held MC (0-2) scoreless in the remaining three innings while posting eight runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
The Angels tallied three hits in game one while leaving three runners on base. Juniors Mia Staggs and Laura Tobin tallied one of those hits each, along with senior Fallon Wimberly. Senior Hannah Weigle picked up the loss in game one giving up five earned runs on eight hits.
In game two the Angels were no-hit but battled tough only falling 3-0. The Marlins picked up two first-inning runs to get rolling and crossed the third in the sixth. Freshman Lillie Davis picked up the loss in her first career start but only gave up five hits while also picking up four strikeouts.
The Angels are back in action Sunday, Feb. 26th, when they travel to Guilford College for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
