Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith softball program picked up two wins on day one of the Grand Slam Triangle Classic outscoring their opponents 13-3 combined. The Avenging Angels beat Messiah 7-1 to begin the day followed by a 6-2 win over Bethany (W.V.).
In game one of the day, both teams struggled to get the offenses going early. Messiah (5-5) struck first in the top of the fourth, but Meredith (2-4) answered with four runs of their own. Freshman Avery Puryear earned two RBIs on a single to right field to help edge the Angels out front.
Meredith tacked on three more in the sixth to close Messiah out. Junior Mia Staggs had a two-hit game while senior Fallon Wimberly and sophomore Jessie Woller added a hit as well.
Freshman Lillie Davis picked up her first win in the circle giving up no earned runs and striking out seven.
In game two of the afternoon against Bethany (W.V.), senior Hannah Weigle also picked up her first win of the season in the circle while Davis earned the save. Weigle tallied four strikeouts and Davis added five while neither gave up a single earned run.
Both teams scored in the first inning but Bethany (W.V.) held a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first. The Angels didn't trail long as freshman Morgan Knight singled to left scoring Puryear to tie the game.
Meredith exploded in the top of the seventh scoring four to earn their second win of the day. Staggs continued her nice day at the plate adding another hit with a run and base on balls. Puryear had a two-hit game while juniors Laura Tobin and Savannah Talley both had two-hit games and one rbi.
Senior Fallon Wimberly and grad student Alyssa Drake also had a rbi apiece.
Meredith is back in action tomorrow when they host Dension at 10 a.m. and Averett at 2 p.m. on day two of the Grand Slam Triangle Classic.
